I only found out about this race a couple of weeks prior and I hadn’t really done any riding on my TT bike for a while now, so in the run up to this 10 mile TT I moved my TT bike onto my turbo and did two weeks of my short build training block on it.
This change over and two weeks really helped as it gave me time to get more time in the aero position and make any other final tweaks I needed to the setup, which it turns out I did. I tweaked my skis and brought them up higher from the bars which made it a lot more comfortable.
The day of the race I went out for a short ride at lunch just to turn the legs over and to make sure the bike was feeling ok, which after a small tweak to the rear brakes everything was perfect and the short run out was really nice in the sun.
I’d packed my bag the night before which meant I was able to quickly grab everything together and head off to the race after work, this took a lot of stress and worry off my shoulders and its something i’m going to make sure I do for each event. Getting to the start line was a bit of a nightmare the traffic was terrible and I actually thought I was going to miss it so this stressed me out a little but I managed to get there with plenty of time to spare so I was stressing over nothing.
It was great to see the amount of people that turned up 33 in total so this was the largest TT event i’d been part of so far, this was the first time i’ve ridden the K33/10S course so wasn’t sure what to expect my best 10 mile to date was 26m 48s. I wasn’t too happy about this but I had only ridden two 10 mile TT’s up to this point, but I was told when I went in for my bike fit on the bike that I should be looking to ride at least a 24 minute 10 Mile which at the time of being told this I didn’t think I was capable of.
I was the 18th rider off so I had some time to warm up which I took advantage of, after my warm up I got to the start line and waited my turn. The race itself went well I managed to have the luck of the traffic on the two roundabouts so I wasn’t held up and I felt strong going through the dual carriageway. I was struggling a little with my breathing in the aero position so this meant I had to pull up on my bars which after having a brief discussion with a couple of riders probably cost me some time.
I was really happy to see the finish line and I gave it one more push in the aero and put out as much power as I could and managed to come in with a time of 24:05 so I managed to smash 2 minutes off my PB which i’m really happy about, but after thinking about the time I spent out of aero I think I can go sub 24 which i’d be really really pleased with.
Overall it was a great event I came away with a new PB and didn’t get injured so win win all round.
